While the recent trial of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein made media headlines for months, the eventual execution of the former Iraqi leader was completed in only a couple of days, as the Iraqi authorities sought to bring some closure ahead of an important religious period.
Within hours of Saddam being hung under the control of Iraqi officials, an unauthorised video was released on to the internet showing the full execution, after apparently being recorded on a mobile phone. The video footage has found it way onto thousands of cell phones and mobile phones around the world, as technology has encouraged the lightening fast circulation of the 4 minutes of footage.
The speed with which the footage was downloaded onto the internet and circulated via mobile phones and email, shows the power of today's technology. The fact that the video is available everywhere shows the power and popularity of mediums such as Blue tooth, Mobile to PC Download connections, Mobile Email as well as the more basic MMS for mobile phone to cell phone transfer.
The compact nature of today's mobile phones, and relative quality of picture and sound recording was also a major fact in the recording of the footage. In the hustle and bustle of the execution chamber, it appears that nobody noticed the rogue mobile phone user recording the whole episode (it has since been announced that an Iraqi official has been arrested on suspicion of producing the unauthorised footage).
Aside from the fact that this was the execution of Saddam Hussein, a man who produced a multitude of comments and opinions in his life time, the power of mobile phone technology has again been brought to the forefront as the network and handset manufacturers continue to push the boundaries back still further.
